Kuznetsova, Davydenko progress at Flushing Meadows

The third-seeded Russian tennis player Svetlana Kuznetsova has survived an early scare to see off Romania's Sorana Cirstea and book her place in the third round of the US Open in New York.

The 2004 champion and last year's runner-up struggled initially and trailed 4-2 in the first set.

But she came back to level at 4-4, won the tie break easily and took the second set 6-1.

The 15th seed Patty Schnyder of Switzerland made easier work on both sets in her 6-3 6-3 win over Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

And the men's fifth seed Nikolay Davydenko has shrugged off his recent poor form to charge into the second round of the US Open with a straight sets win over Israel's Dudi Sela.
