Knights create a storm against the NRL leader Melbourne

The Newcastle Knights rugby league side has upset NRL leader Melbourne 17-16 and put itself in the box seat for a finals berth.

For Melbourne, the loss leaves their quest for a third consecutive minor premiership in question, with Cronulla now tied with the reigning premiers on 36 points and Manly favoured to join them when they host the Gold Coast tomorrow night.

Meanwhile North Queensland has killed off Canberra's chances of a top four finish with a 22-10 win in Townsville and in-form St George Illawarra has virtually extinguished Parramatta's finals hopes with a 40-14 victory.

Wendell Sailor scored a hat-trick of tries for the Dragons at ANZ Stadium tonight.
