Suprise in England football squad

8:19 am on 1 September 2008

The England football coach Fabio Capello has named uncapped Fulham midfielder Jimmy Bullard in his 23-man squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Croatia.

With Steven Gerrard, Michael Carrick and Owen Hargreaves out injured, the tough-tackling, hard-running Bullard, who turns 30 in October, gets a surprise call.

There is no place though for Michael Owen, who looked rusty in his first full appearance of the season at the weekend for Newcastle United, or fellow striker Peter Crouch.

Emile Heskey continues his international Indian summer by retaining his place, with Wayne Rooney, Jermain Defoe and Theo Walcott offering attacking options.

David Beckham is again included.

England play Andorra in Barcelona next Saturday before taking on Croatia in Zagreb on September 10th.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: David James (Portsmouth), Rob Green (West Ham United), Paul Robinson (Blackburn Rovers)

Defenders: Wayne Bridge (Chelsea), Wes Brown (Manchester United), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Glen Johnson (Portsmouth), John Terry (Chelsea), Joleon Lescott (Everton), Matthew Upson (West Ham United)
