The New Zealand racing driver Scott Dixon has finished fifth in the penultimate race of the Indcycar series Detroit but retains a 30 point lead in the championship.

Dixon's nearest rival Helio Castroneves finished second after race controllers penalised him for blocking Justin Wilson, who went on to win the race for the team co-owned by actor Paul Newman who is reported to be dying of cancer.

The Newman-Haas victory means Castroneves must win next Monday at the Chicagoland Speedway to stop Dixon winning in second championship.

Dixon says he thought it would be the easier race to win all year as his car was fanastic but he couldn't get past slower cars after getting stuck in traffic following his first pit stop
