The unseeded American tennis player Mardy Fish has made it a hatrick of seeded scalps at the US Open, ruining the 22nd birthday celebrations of Frenchman Gale Monfils 7-5 6-2 6-2.

It's the first time Fish has made the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows, and his opponent in the quarter-finals will almost certainly be the top seed Rafael Nadal.

In the women's draw, the in-form Russian 6th seed Dinara Safina, bidding for her first grand slam title, reached the quarter-finals with a straight sets win over a German qualifier.
