Baseball makes first instant replay ruling

6:59 pm on 4 September 2008

Major League Baseball's instant replay system has been used for the first time with umpires upholding a home run by Alex Rodriguez during the New York Yankees' 8-4 run win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Rodriguez's travelled down the left-field foul pole and was originally ruled a home run.

However, after a protest by the Rays manager, the umpires reviewed the call on a replay monitor before making the decision that it would stand.

Major League Baseball officially implemented instant replays last week after several controversial home run rulings this season.
