Eli Manning has combined with newly-signed Plaxico Burress to help the defending Super Bowl champion, the New York Giants, defeat Washington 16-7 in the NFL season-opener.

Manning connected 10 times with Burress for 133 yards.

New York defence did its part, allowing Washington just seven total yards in the first quarter and 51 in the first half.

New York kept Washington quarterback Jason Campbell from completing a pass for the first 28 minutes of the game and denied the Redskins a first down until just over a minute was left in the half.

New York will open its road schedule next weekend against the St. Louis Rams, having won 13 straight away from home.
