Federer advances to fifth straight U.S Open final

8:55 am on 7 September 2008

The former world number one tennis player, Roger Federer, has stormed into his fifth successive U.S. Open final but his challenger will not be known till tomorrow after heavy rain washed away the rest of the day's play at Flushing Meadows.

The four-times champion has scored a four set, 6-3 5-7 7-5 6-2, victory over Serbian third seed Novak Djokovic.

The other semi final between Rafael Nadal and British sixth seed Andy Murray was foiled by the bad weather.

Murray was in the driver's seat to book a date with the Swiss, leading Nadal 6-2 7-6 2-3, when play was suspended by rain.

Jelena Jankovic and Serena Williams have also been forced to wait to settle the women's final.
