The New Zealand motor racing driver Scott Dixon quest for a second IndyCar championship has been given a boost, with the only driver capable of surpassing him forced to start from the back of the grid in tomorrow's season ending race in Chicago.

Dixon's posted the second fastest qualifying time and will start on the front row with Australian Ryan Briscoe on pole.

Dixon needs to finish no worse than eighth to guarantee himself his second IndyCar title but Brazilian Helio Castroneves, who could still win the title had his fourth-place qualifying run thrown out by race officials, for continually running below the course's lower line.

Castroneves will now start last in the 28-car field as he tries to make up a 30-point gap up on Dixon.
