All Whites complete series sweep

6:49 am on 11 September 2008

The All Whites have beaten New Caledonia 3-0 at Albany to complete an Oceania World Cup qualifying sweep after their win in Noumea in the first leg.

Striker Shane Smeltz scored his second double and of substitute Jeremy Christie got his first international goal, with all three coming after half-time last night.

Although they had already secured a playoff against the fifth-placed Asian side and are two matches away from going to South Africa in 2010 they didn't relax and only a lack of finishing touches stopped them winning by more

Smeltz has matched Keith Nelson's 30-year-old record of scoring in six consecutive internationals and equalled the 10 goal haul Nelson managed in that run.

He has a chance to set a new record in the All Whites last Oceania fixture in Fiji on November 19.

However coach Ricki Herbert says the match in Lautoka will be used to introduce younger players.
