The New Zealand runner and team captain, Tim Prendergast has missed out on a medal, finishing fourth in the 5000m at the Beijing Paralympics.
Prendergast, a gold medalist in the 800m in Athens four years ago was in fourth place coming into the home stretch when it became noticeable that his arms were starting to flay.
He stumbled coming down the straight and collapsed with less than 20 metres of the race to go with the crowd urging him on he got up and virtually crawled the few metres across the line before collapsing again.
Medical staff carried him away on a stretcher and he is now on a drip.
The race was won in world record time of 14 minutes 24.02 seconds by Henry Kiprono of Kenya who finished 150m ahead of his nearest rival.
Meanwhile at the pool Sophie Pascoe has qualified fastest for tonight's 200m individual medley with a time of 2 minutes 39.40 seconds.
Pascoe, is chasing her third medal of the Games having already won a gold and a silver in the pool.
The final will be held at 11.30pm tongight (NZ time).
