Chelsea start Champions League well

9:21 am on 17 September 2008

Chelsea, last season's beaten European Champions League football finalists, began their new campaign with a convincing 4-nil victory over Bordeaux in their Group A match at Stamford Bridge.

Headers by Frank Lampard and Joe Cole, in his 50th European match for the club, put Chelsea in control after 30 minutes and only wayward shooting from Lampard and Nicolas Anelka before the break, prevented the London side winning by a bigger margin.

The goals in the final 10 minutes from Florent Malouda and Anelka gave the scoreline a far more realistic look as Chelsea dominated the game from the first kick to the last.

Two first-half goals by Steven Gerrard gave Liverpool a 2-1 win at Olympique Marseille in their opening Group D match.

In some of the other results, Barcelona beat Sporting Lisbon 3-1, Athletico Madrid beat PSV Eindhowven 3-nil and Inter Milan beat Panathinaikos 2-nil.
