New Zealand Breakers off to a winning start

6:51 am on 19 September 2008

The New Zealand Breakers have started their Australian National Basketball League season with a comprehensive 114-93 victory over the Wollongong Hawks in Auckland.

Breakers guard Kirk Penney scored a career best 41 points, while Rick Rickert completed a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The Hawks were in touch throughout the match until the 4th quarter when Penney and Oscar Foreman, who made 14, started drilling their long range shots.

Penney was wrapped with getting the win and paid special mention to how well his team played in the second half.

He says he's give the second half an eight or nine out of ten.

Penney says the first half was rubbish, however it was a great fourth quarter for them and that's ultimately where their half-time adjustments paid off.

Next Thursday the Breakers host the Melbourne Tigers in Auckland.
