Nike pull out of top swimwear market

Nike is leaving the elite swimwear market, which could have a domino effect the United States performance in the pool at the 2011 London Olympics.

The company will continue to provide swimwear for universities and sell to traditional retail customers but will no longer compete against the likes of Speedo to get their gear on top swimmers.

Nike lost some of its edge at the Games when Speedo stole the spotlight with its LZR Racer suit.

According to Speedo, of the 77 world records set since the release of the suit in February, 72 have been in the LZR Racer...among them the record eight gold medal winning Michael Phelps.
