Cronulla's coach says Storm captain deserves ban

6:04 am on 24 September 2008

The Cronulla and Australian league coach Ricky Stuart says the Melbourne Storm captain Cameron Smith deserves to miss two weeks for a grapple tackle, even if he has to sit out Australia's World Cup opener against the Kiwis.

Smith will front the NRL judiciary tonight to defend a charge of unnecessary contact with the head or neck of Brisbane's Sam Thaiday in last week's epic semi-final win.

Stuart says it would be unfortunate for Smith to face missing the most important part of the year, but he has to wear the consequences of pushing the boundaries too often.

A panel of three former players will decide Smith's fate.
