The German cyclist Bert Grabsch has upstaged a handful of more fancied contenders to claim a maiden time trial gold at the world road race championships in the Italian Alps.

Germany's national champion took full advantage of the absence of the two-time defending champion Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland to finish the relatively flat 43.7 kilometre course in 52min 01sec.

An early pacesetter, Canada's Svein Tuft, took the silver medal, with David Zabriskie of the United States upstaging the gold medal favourite and compatriot Levi Leipheimer to claim bronze.
