Spurs' sorry decline puts Ramos under pressure

7:10 am on 1 October 2008

The pressure is building on Juande Ramos, the coach of Premier League football club Tottenham Hotspur, just seven months after Spurs beat current league leaders Chelsea in the League Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

That victory was seen as the start of a new era for the success-starved north London team - but the side's fortunes have declined rather than improved, Spurs making their worst start to a league season for 53 years.

Tottenham are bottom of the Premier League with just two points from their opening six matches and are one of only two teams in the Football League without a league win this term, along with fourth division Grimsby Town.

The poor run has put Spanish coach Ramos, who guided Spurs to victory in the League Cup just four months after replacing Martin Jol as manager at White Hart Lane, under intense pressure.

The sale of strikers Dimitar Berbatov of Bulgaria and Ireland captain Robbie Keane to Manchester United and Liverpool respectively were just two of an entire team's worth of players who have left Spurs.

Seven arrived in the summer also but Ramos hasn't fielded the same lineup in successive games this season

Tottenham's next match tomorrow is a visit to Wisla Krakow in a UEFA Cup first round tie protecting a 2-1 first-leg lead - their only victory this season.
