Second-placed Canterbury has built a nine point gap on third-placed Hawkes Bay after beating the Magpies 31-7 in the penultimate round of the national provincial rugby competition.
Wellington, who eventually tamed Tasman 26-20 in their Ranfurly Shield challenge, leads the competition by six points.
