The New Zealand triathlete Sam Warriner has finished second in the ITU World Cup event in France.

Warriner came in 34 seconds behind Lisa Norden of Sweden and is a contender for the 2008 world cup title with one event to go.

Warriner has cemented her spot as the World Cup number two and is only 24 points behind the leader Felicity Abram of Australia, who ended up 11th in France.

Fellow New Zealanders Andrea Hewitt, Debbie Tanner and Nicky Samuels finished ninth, 14th and 17th respectively.

Samuels was making her return to World Cup racing after an injury-plagued few months.

In the men's race Clark Ellice placed seventh, 44 seconds behind the medals.

Kris Gemmell withdrew during the run.
