Future of 250cc class to be decided

8:14 am on 28 September 2008

Manufacturers of Grand Prix racing motorcycles have proposed to abolish the 250cc class in 2011 to make way for a new 600cc engine category.

The sport's governing body, the International Motorcycling Federation, says the proposal will be studied in detail by the Grand Prix Commission, the supreme decision-making body of the motorcycle world championship series.

The idea has been discussed for a while as manufacturers want to cut the cost of developing motorcycles as they focus on four-stroke rather than the cheaper two-stroke models which currently make up the core of the 250cc class.

The change is also seen as making it easier for riders to step up to the premier MotoGP class.
