Heineken Open draw changes

7:09 am on 1 October 2008

There's to be a change to the top men's tennis tournament in New Zealand in January with the draw for the Heineken Open changing from 32 players to 28, giving the top four seeds will have byes into the second round.

The tournament director Richard Palmer says the change is intended to make Auckland more attractive to big name players just below the top tier as they decide where to play before the Australian Open.

Palmer says top players have said they don't want to play five matches the week before the first Grand Slam tournament starts.

He says the smaller draw enables the top seeds to spread their matches and will help secure some big names with the tournament launch on November 1.
