Real Madrid beat Zenit

10:12 am on 1 October 2008

Real Madrid scored twice in the first half to overcome a spirited Zenit St Petersburg 2-1 in European football's Champions League.

An own goal and an opportunistic strike by Ruud van Nistlerooy gave the nine-times European champions their second consecutive victory in Group H, and their first away win in the competition for two years.

Portugal international Danny, Zenit's record 30 million euro signing last month, scored for the Russian champions midway through the first half.

The UEFA Cup holders, making their Champions League debut this season, are still looking for their first points in the competition after going down 1-0 at Juventus in their opener two weeks ago.

In the UEFA Cup another Russian team, CSKA Moscow have advanced after a 1-0 win over Slaven Belupo Koprivnica of Croatia, winning 3-1 on aggregate.

Ireland's St. Patrick's Athletic were again held scoreless, this time at home, so Hertha Berlin of Germany win 2-0 on aggregate.
