Canadian Grand Prix decision shocks Montreal

8:07 am on 9 October 2008

The Mayor of Montreal estimates his city stands to lose $120 million after the shock exclusion of the Canadian Grand Prix from next year's world motor racing schedule.

Organisers of the Canadian round, which has been a favourite with teams and sponsors, had no idea their event would be removed from the schedule, and the official website is still advertising tickets for next year.

There'll be no North American stop in 2009 as the United States Grand Prix was axed from this year's championship.

Canada's place in the 18-race championshp was taken by Abu Dhabi, which will host the final round next year.

The 18-race calendar reinserted a three-week summer break by moving the Turkish Grand Prix from August to fill Canada's slot in early June.

The Australian Grand Prix kicks off the championship at the end of March, with Abu Dhabi making its debut as the championship finale on November 15.
