The New Zealand triathletes Cameron Brown and Gina Ferguson have bagged top-10 finishes at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii.

Brown has been moved up a place to fifth while Ferguson finished a creditable eighth in her rookie year in Hawaii.

Britain's Chrissie Wellington won the women's race easily and New Zealand women's champion Jo Lawn finished 14th,

Initially Brown finished sixth in the men's race won by Australian Craig Alexander who went one better than last year.

But he was elevated after Germany's Timo Brach disqualified for failing to take his penalty for drafting.

Brown says having to ride 30 kilometres on a softening tyre took a toll and his legs gave out when it really mattered on the run.

The 36-year-old says he'll be return next year to see if he can get back on the podium.
