The first India-Australia cricket test finished in a tame draw last night after a final session lengthened by two delays for bad light.

Set 299 for victory, India were 177 for 4 when the Australian captain Ricky Ponting agreed to call a halt to proceedings.

India had been a shaky 77 for 3 before Sachin Tendulkar and V.V.S Laxman combined in a stand of 61 runs that virtually ended Australian hopes of squeezing out a last day win.

Tendulkar began his innings needing 64 to pass Brian Lara's world record number of test runs, but he was dismissed for 49.

Zaheer Khan was named man of the match for his first innings double of 5-91 and an unbeaten 57.
