Fourth seed Andy Murray has eased into the third round of the Madrid Masters tennis tournament after Italian Simone Bolelli retired injured.

The Scot, playing for the first time since losing to Roger Federer in the U.S. Open final five weeks ago, was leading 6-love 2-1 when Bolelli quit with what appeared to be a shoulder injury.

Murray will meet towering Croatian Marin Cilic next after the 20-year-old toppled 13th seed and local favourite Fernando Verdasco in straight sets.

American James Blake, the 11th seed joined Verdasco as a second round loser after being bundled out by Frenchman Gilles Simon in 3.

Finland's Jarkko Nieminen survived a fightback from Russia's Mikhail Youzhny in a first round match to win in 3 while Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber, France's Gael Monfils and Sweden's Robin Soderling all made it to the second round.
