Former AFL star Wayne Carey avoids jail sentence in Miami

The disgraced retired Aussie Rules football star Wayne Carey has pleaded guilty to assaulting and resisting Miami police in a drunken brawl but has avoided a U.S. jail sentence.

Police were called to a Miami Hotel in October last year after Carey smashed a wine glass in his girlfriends face.

Police went to Carey's suite and a brawl broke out with Carey claiming he didn't realise they were police officers.

Carey's girlfried was with him in court after deciding not to press charges.

In exchange for his guilty pleas prosecutors agreed Carey will serve 50 hours of community service, attend alcohol and anger management classes, serve two years probation and pay $US500 to a Miami police charity.

Carey's also agreed to write letters of apology to the polcie involved.
