Tendulkar top of the world

The Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has eclipsed retired West Indian Brian Lara's world record for most test runs.

On the first day of the second test against Australia Tendulkar needed 15 runs to surpass Lara's record of 11,953 runs, a feat he achieved after tea.

He also completed 12,000 runs in tests before being dismissed for 88.

India is 311-5 heading into the second day at Punjab CA Stadium.
