The young New Zealand racing driver Earl Bamber has had a strong start to his GP2 Asia Series campaign with second place in the feature race at the China Formula 1 Grand Prix meeting in Shanghai.

The 18-year-old from Wanganui showed his his podium finish in the rain for A1 Team New Zeakand in the Netherlands was no fluke by quickly dispatching the other New Zealand driver in the race, Chris van der Drift.

After passing van de Drift, who is the European Formula Master champion, Bamber spent the rest of the race chasing the Italian winner Davide Valsecchi.

He will go into the second round in Dubai on December 4 in fourth, eight points behind the Spanish leader Roldan Rodriguez who won the first race on Saturday.
