Papua New Guinea push England hard

7:27 am on 26 October 2008

England have opened the rugby league World Cup with a 32-22 win over Papua New Guinea in Townsville.

England were headed towards an embarrassing first-up defeat to the Kumuls when they trailed 16-12 at half time at Dairy Farmers Stadium, but rallied with four tries to one in the final 40 minutes to secure the victory.

England's win means they take the early lead in the pool ahead of tonight's heavyweight clash in Sydney, between Australia and New Zealand.

First, however, Scotland take on France in Canberra.
