WADA removes hair-loss drug from banned list

A popular hair-loss drug known for its parallel use as a masking agent for other banned substances has been taken off the World Anti-Doping Agency's banned list.

Finasteride is no longer banned because scientists can now more easily detect the drugs it can be used to mask.

It was banned in 2005 after research revealed it can mask certain steroids, including nandrolone.

The New Zealand tennis player Mark Nielsen served a two year ban after testing positive in 2006.

Neilsen said Finasteride was in a prescription hair loss product he'd used for three years but he decided it would cost too much to appeal.

The Australian and Brazilian footballers Stan Lazaridis and Romario also copped suspensions.
