Barton strikes as Newcastle gain valuable win

Newcastle United has beaten West Bromwich Albion 2-1 for only their second win this season in English football's Premier League.

Joey Barton justified the faith of United's manager Joe Kinnear by scoring the opening goal in his first start since being released from prison.

Barton returned last weekend in the north-east derby against Sunderland after the FA imposed a six-game ban following his 74 days in prison for assaulting a 16-year-old boy, and a former Manchester City team-mate Ousmane Dabo.

Newcastle's first win since August takes them out of the relegation zone and into 15th on nine points, level with Everton and a point behind West Brom.
