England bomb out, lose massive prize pool

2:40 pm on 2 November 2008

The Stanford Superstars have won the richest-ever cricket match in Antigua, beating England by 10 wickets in the winner-takes-all Twenty20 format -- and making a cool 1 million US dollars each.

The $US20 million prize money - that's $34 million in New Zealand dollars - is the richest team prize for a single sporting match in history.

The Superstars, a West Indies combination, take home $US13 million with a million shared between the 12th man and other non-playing squad members, and another million split among the victorious management staff.

The losing England players, on the other hand, get nothing - the remaining $US7 million in prize money is to be shared between the two countries' cricket boards.

Victory was all but assured after England were bowled out for a meagre score of 99.

Set 100 to win, the Superstars cruised to victory with more than seven overs to spare.

The Superstars captain Chris Gayle, a West Indies Test batsman, was 65 not out, with five sixes and five fours, and Andre Fletcher 32 not out.

The match brought to a close the Stanford Super Series, sponsored by Sir Allen Stanford, an American business tycoon.
