6:17 pm on 2 November 2008

The Republic of Korea has beaten Brazil 2 - 1 in the under-17 women's football World Cup in Wellington, so the Latin American giants join hosts New Zealand in being eliminated after just two games with no points.

Japan thrashed France 7 - 1 in Hamilton to go top of their pool. Japan led 6 - 1 at half time.

Earlier England qualified for the last eight after beating Nigeria 1 - nil in Wellington.

It was a smash and grab raid for the English, their 79th minute winner coming very much against the run of play as the Nigerians dominated the Group D pool match on all fronts bar the scoreboard.

In the other early game, the USA knocked out Paraguay with a 3 - 1 victory at Waikato Stadium.

New Zealand play a final game against Colombia in Wellington on Tuesday.
