Big fleet for Sydney-Hobart

7:29 am on 4 November 2008

The largest fleet in over a decade will line up for the 64th Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

A nominated fleet of 113, ranging from heavier, classic yachts to the sleek and modern, will set sail on the 628 nautical mile course at 1pm on December 26th.

The fleet will represent every Australian state, the USA, UK, New Zealand, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Russia and New Caledonia.

A fleet of 90 yachts applied to enter last year's race and of those, 82 made it to the start line on Boxing Day and 79 crossed the finish line off Hobart's historic Battery Point.

Wild Oats XI took 2007 line honours for the third consecutive year and American yacht Rosebud was the handicap winner.
