A controversial penalty deep into injury time has seen Liverpool snatch a 1-1 home draw with Atletico Madrid in European football's Champions League while Chelsea lost in Rome.

Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard goaled after he was challenged in the box and the referee awarded a debatable penalty.

Both teams are five points clear at the top of the Group D and must now wait for next week's games against Olympic Marseille and PSV Eindhoven to confirm their progression to the next round.

AS Roma beat Chelsea 3-1 but the London club stays top of Group A with seven points from four games, one point ahead of Roma and Bordeaux.

Barcelona reached the last 16, despite being held to a 1-1 at home to Basel, and Sporting Lisbon went through with a 1-0 home win over Shakhtar Donetsk

Olympic beat PSV 3-0 in Marseille, Bordeaux were 2-1 winners at Cluj in Romania and Inter-Milan escaped with a 3-all draw at Famagusta in Cyprus.
