Little known local upstages superstars

A little known local golfer upstaged several of the game's superstars to take the ouright lead on a rain affected first day of the $8.3 million Singapore Open on Sentosa Island.

Lam Chih Bing posted a four-under par 67 to lead by one stroke, although half the field were unable to complete their rounds on a windy day interrupted by tropical storms.

Ernie Els got to three under after 11 holes, and his New Zealand playing partner Mark Brown made two over par.

The Irish star Padraig Harrington was happy to post a one over par 72, while the world number three Phil Mickelson was six strokes from the lead at the end if his round.

The New Zealand amateur Danny Lee had a respectable 74.
