Police investigate Drogba coin throwing incident

London police are investigating an incident at a football match yesterday involving the Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, who threw a coin back into the crowd during the League Cup loss to Burnley at Stamford Bridge.

Drogba had gestured to Burnley fans while celebrating his first goal of the season on his return from injury, as Chelsea seemed to be on track for a routine win.

He appeared to be struck by the coin and threw it back into the crowd.

The Ivory Coast striker says the big mistake he made was to throw it back and he regrets his action, for which he was shown a yellow card.

Drogba says he just reacted in the heat of the moment, it's not something he should do in a football match and if someone was hurt he apologises for it.

Burnley, from the second-division Championship league, went on to force extra time at the Premier League leaders before winning 5-4 on penalties.

The League Cup is the least-valuable silverware available to all teams in the Football League.
