Sigmund appointed captain of All Whites side

6:20 pm on 18 November 2008

The Wellington Phoenix defender Ben Sigmund has been named as All Whites captain for their dead rubber world cup football qualifier against Fiji in Lautoka tomorrow.

The New Zealand side has already topped the Oceania qualifying pool and will play the fifth best Asian side for a place at the world cup in South Africa.

With the game effectively meaningless coach Ricki Herbert hasn't called in his overseas based players, giving Sigmund the chance to lead an inexperienced side in what will be his eight international,

It marks a major turn around for the 27 year old who only a year and a half ago returned to the side seven years after making his debut.

The match kicks off at 7pm tomorrow night.
