Top spot in sight for Breakers

9:06 am on 20 November 2008

Top spot on the National Basketball League ladder is on the line tonight when the New Zealand Breakers host the in-form South Dragons at the North Shore Events Centre.

The Dragons have won eight matches in a row, but a loss would see them lose their number one ranking to the Breakers, who've lost just twice at home this season.

The Breakers are back home from a tough trip to Queensland, where their big forward Rick Rickert and sharp shooting guard Kirk Penney led them to wins in Cairns and Townsville.

If they're to take over at the top they'll have to ensure the Dragon's defensive end isn't allowed to stifle the three point shooting skills of the likes of Penney and CJ Bruton.

Last night the defending champion Melbourne Tigers snatched a 99-98 win over the Cairns Taipans to secure third place on the table.
