In Mar del Plata, Argentina, Fernando Verdasco beat Jose Acasuso in the first reverse singles in four sets to give the Spaniards an unbeatable 3-1 lead.
Both players were replacements for their number ones with Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro injured, and David Ferrer dropped after a heavy loss in the opening singles.
