The Australian swimmer Nick D'Arcy has pleaded guilty to a charge of assault which cost him his place at this year's Beijing Olympics.
D'Arcy's lawyer Jack Leitner entered the plea at a Sydney court following an incident involving a former swimmer Simon Cowley at a nightclub in March when Cowley suffered serious facial injuries.
He said D'Arcy had agreed to plead guilty after a deal had been struck with prosecutors but still maintained he was acting in self-defence.
However Leitner says D'Arcy accepts his response was excessive.
He'll be sentenced in February.
