The National Rugby League's chief executives have backed the plan to use two referees in games from next season.

The NRL board will now vote on the matter when it meets next month.

NRL chief executive David Gallop says it is something that has been debated many times and there is a strong view that they need to try it and to see if it does in fact lead to the outcomes we all want which is greater consistency and a better flowing game.

Gallop says if it doesn't add value or if it is not proving effective then they will review it and make further changes if and when necessary.

The CEOs also voted to stop using the video referee to rule on penalties for stripping the ball during tackles.
