Pampling wins Oz Masters in playoff

The Queensland golfer Rod Pampling needed three extra holes before winning the Australian Masters title yesterday at Huntgingdale in Melbourne.

Pampling and the Victorian Marcus Fraser were tied on 12-under par after the fourth round, and the pair replayed the 18th hole three times before Pampling won with a par.

The PGA tour regular has won twice in the States in the last four years, but this was his first Australian title for nine years.

Robert Allenby, a sentimental favourite with the home crowd after he revealed at the weekend his mother doesn't have long to live, faded yesterday to finish third.

The top New Zealand finishers were the US amateur champion Danny Lee and Tim Wilkinson who tied for 11th.
