After five V8 Supercar championships, five Bathurst 1000 triumphs, more round wins than anyone else Australian Mark Skaife will finish fulltime driving this weekend in the season finale at Oran Park.

He departs the sport as the face of Holden - a role that will continue during retirement - stepping into the role occupied for so long by the late Peter Brock.

The son of a motor car dealer who was also a Holden motor racing mechanic, Skaife started his touring car career driving Nissans - winning one of his championship titles and two Bathursts in a Nissan.

Skaife's relinquished his ownership in the Holden Racing Team team to clear a reported $4 million debt and believes Oran Park is the right place to bow out.

Skaife isn't givng up racing altogether as he plans to drive at least two endurance rounds, including the Bathurst, 1000, next year.
