The stand out swimmer at the Sydney Olympics, Dutchman Pieter van den Hoogenband has announced his retirement from the sport.
Van den Hoogenband won gold in both the 100m and 200m freestyle in Sydney and went onto defend his 100m title in Athens four years later.
But he hasn't competed since the Beijing Olympics after his dream of making Olympic history by winning a third consecutive one-hundred metre freestyle was dashed when he finished fourth.
