Many pitfalls in the Tiger chase

6:28 am on 9 December 2008

Golf Australia has a business plan and sponsors with the money to bring Tiger Woods to the Australian Open, but its new chief executive is not about to stake his reputation on it.

Stephen Pitt says many things have to fall in place before Tiger will once again stalk the fairways of Australia's premier golf tournament.

He won't comment on the cost, understood to be at least $6 million, but confirms there are plans and willing sponsors.

Clarke says Woods knows he had a a huge responsibility as the best in the world to take the game around the world and hopefully it won't be too long before he is in Australia again,

Woods is still recuperating from the knee surgery he underwent following the US Open in June, and although his recovery is going well he has set no date for a return to competitive golf.

The tournament starts at at Royal Sydney on Thursday with a field including five players in the world's top 50 - Geoff Ogilvy (11), Adam Scott (16), Robert Allenby (27), Stuart Appleby (37) and South African Tim Clark (42).
