NBL warning as Taipans near rescue

6:39 am on 11 December 2008

Basketball Australia has warned that the next National Basketball League club to hit troubled waters will most likely sink.

Interim chief executive Scott Derwin is expected to push for a rescue package to help bail out the financially stricken Cairns Taipans, who are in voluntary receivership with operating debts of around $1 million.

Derwin is understood to have received assurances from all NBL clubs this week they were financially capable of seeing out the current season, but he's assured them there will be no more rescue packages should another team fall into trouble.

A decision is expected today regarding the staging of the Taipans game on Saturday night against the Gold Coast.
