Davenport to play in Australian Open

The American tennis star Lindsay Davenport has scuttled rumours of retirement by entering the 2009 Australian Open.

The 2000 Open women's champion had reportedly been contemplating retirement but Australian Open organisers have announced the 32-year-old will play in next month's tournament.

Davenport lost to eventual champion Maria Sharapova in the second round of the 2008 Open, but hasn't played since this year's US Open in August.

As well as her Australian Open singles title, Davenport also won Wimbledon in 1999 and the US Open in 1998.

Entries for next year's Open have closed and the top 100 men and women are all on the list for the main draw.
