Hamilton golfer David Smail has dropped back to a share of second at the Australian Open.

He led for several holes in his third round on Saturday but is now one under par through 11 holes in his third round, level with the Australian Ewan Porter on 10 under overall at the Royal Sydney Golf club.

Smail completed his rain-interrupted second round in the morning, picking up five shots before catching the leader, Australia's Stephen Dartnall.

Dartnall's now dropped back to a share of fourth while his countryman Andre Stolz leads on an impressive eight under near the end of his third round.

The next best New Zealander, Mark Brown, has moved up to sixth, three under through 13 holes.

Danny Lee's in a share of 27th with Gareth Paddison in a bunch. Richard Lee and Josh Geary are sitting with several others at 43rd and Mahal Pearce 51st equal.

Phil Tataurangi missed the cut.
